SFNIBA Beautification Plan
What is Community Beautification?
Community beautification can be thought of as an intersection of several elements, as illustrated below. At first glance it is the beautification of a community: fresh paint on buildings, planting initiatives, and streetscaping, but it is more than that. It is a holistic way for communities to see themselves reflected in their surroundings, to feel connected to their fellow members, to think of their community as a safe place full of optimism and opportunity, and to inspire action and growth.
What are the components?
Common community beautification components and features may include planters and planting beds, public furniture (benches, chairs, picnic tables), public art such as façade treatments, sculpture and installations, mural painting, and improved pedestrian circulation and connectivity such as trail networks, sidewalks, as well as signage and wayfinding elements. In addition, designation and development of public areas for pop-up markets, community and ceremonial gatherings, and special events are typically included in beautification planning.
